Impression Very Fine. Superbly executed soft "bokashi" shading to lantern, dress, water, and sky; nicely detailed lines.
Condition Very Good+++. Strong colors. (Few small scattered spots; has the two folds typical of all "kuchi-e".) Album-backed.
Reference/Illus See Article #10: "Kuchi-e," or Literary Magazine Frontispieces.
Comments Here we see a young woman by the seashore as she places a candle inside a beacon light--perhaps to help guide her gone-to-sea lover back to home. Kiyokata's prints are seldom encountered, with his "bijin-ga" images sought after by collectors.
