Artist YOSHIDA, Hiroshi
(1876-1950)
Title "Sailing Boats, Afternoon"
("Hansen--Gogo")
Date 1926. "Jizuri" seal, artist's pencil-signature lower margin, "brush-signed" by artist in image.
Series "Inland Sea Series"
("Seto-Naikai Shu")
Publisher Yoshida Studio
Seal, Carver/Printer Blocks cut by Mayeda.
Image Size Very LARGE format: 14 1/8 x 20 ("DOUBLE-oban")
Impression Very Fine. Skillfully executed "bokashi" shading; light "gauffrage" to outline of sailboat's sails; baren "sujizuri" (tracings) to sails; nicely visible woodgrain to water; life-like reflection in water; crisply detailed lines.
Condition Good to Very Good. Quite good colors. Clean backside; full margins. (Wear, small holes, thinning (reinforced) to margins and corners; scratch to center sail; light toning.)
Reference/Illus "The Complete Woodblocks of Hiroshi Yoshida" #42; Blair 1930 Toledo Exhibition #252.
Comments Very large ("double-oban"), beautiful Yoshida "sailboat" image. Seldom seen--impressively large format and difficult to print. This is the "blue background 'Afternoon' version (without the distant boats left);" five other variant states exist for this image (using different colors).
