What This Means - Why It's So Important
All prints sold by Ukiyoe Gallery are guaranteed to be genuine and are further guaranteed to be "as described."
It has always be our policy to fully describe and accurately disclose the condition of each and every print we
sell. Careful attention is paid to the inspection of each print--the same critical analysis YOU would want to do if
you were actually holding the print in you own hands and examining it yourself. Much of this ability to accurately
and discerningly evaluate (and then describe) a print's condition comes with experience. We've now sold over 3,000
prints together and have built our business and personal
reputations on this policy of full disclosure. To learn what just a few of our many satisfied Ukiyoe-Gallery
customers have had to say about us, please see these
"Customer Comments."
As you can see by the many Gallery #1 to Gallery #9 prints which are now tagged as "Sold," we do sell a LOT of prints.
Here, it's been our policy to leave these prints up for future viewing--doing so, we believe offers valuable
information to our customers, as well as a basis of comparison when considering other prints.
It is additionally (and in many cases uniquely) our ability to accurately disclose publisher's information and to
further accurately decipher the Japanese "kanji" writing seen in the margins of many of our prints that makes our
offered prints' descriptions so uniquely accurate and complete. This is aided by Dr. Andreas Grund's
close and direct access with a large variety of publishers and dealers in Japan where he has now been a 15-year
resident while authoring a new
"collector's guide" ("Shiro Kasamatsu--The Complete Woodblock Prints"),
as well as researching and authoring various other technical articles in the field of "shin hanga." Stateside, co-partner
Thomas Crossland also has written numerous short technical articles about woodblocks (including several
co-authored with Dr. Grund) and is further aided (with Japanese translations) by his native-born Japanese wife who is
herself an experienced Japanese/English, English/Japanese translator.
That said, it is further the common knowledge of most experienced collectors that a majority of Japanese woodblock prints
sold today are simply not "new." Being true antiques, most such prints have been previously owned (and cherished) and
are simply being passed down to us today often by a series of previous owners/collectors. For this reason, many such
prints can display (to a varying degree) signs of aging, wear, past mountings, and environmental exposure. Thus, most
prints available on the market today are therefore not "perfect"--however, therein also lies much of the "charm" and
unique appeal of owning a true antique.
Bottomline--and of importance to collectors and connoisseurs of woodblocks--is the relationship between a
print's price/value as it directly relates to both its condition and scarcity. This is why an accurate
and discerningly full disclosure of a print's condition is so vitally important to making an informed and confident
purchase decision.
Hence, when you buy a print from Ukiyoe Gallery, you can do so with complete confidence based on our years
of personal collecting experience and knowledgeable sales expertise. Like you, we too are both serious collectors and
admirers of this worldly unequalled and unique artform.
Our "Open 7-day Return Policy"
All woodblock prints purchased from Ukiyoe Gallery are guaranteed to be genuine and as described. Furthermore, we
unconditionally guarantee your satisfaction. Simply stated: If you are unhappy with your purchase for ANY reason,
it may be returned within 7 days of receipt for a full refund of the purchase price (less shipping costs--NO questions
asked (see Exceptions below).
EXCEPTIONS to our "full refund policy" include prints which are obtained on behalf of our clients by
"Special Order" or as part of occasional "Special Offers," which also includes discounted items
offered as our "Bi-Weekly Specials."
In these cases, it is our policy to decline the
return of such prints. Book returns are also NOT accepted (sorry, we're not a "library"), nor are the
occasional few FRAMED prints (too easily damaged) that we offer essentially "as is."
Special terms also apply regarding prints purchased using our "Layaway Plan"--for those customers
who prefer the option of paying for a print over a two-month (or longer) period of time. Prints purchased by
"Layaway" will continue to remain on display in the Gallery with the notation "Reserved" during this period. Please
also note that a 10% "fee" will be imposed on any such layaway purchases which are defaulted upon OR subsequently
returned after a 60-day period (due to the "opportunity lost" by having such prints off-the-market for 60-plus days).
"Layaway purchases" LONGER than a 60-day period will also be charged an additional 5% "fee" PER MONTH in excess of
2 months on any such layaway purchases which are defaulted upon OR subsequently returned (again, for the "opportunity cost"
by having such prints off-the-market in excess of 60-plus days).
Beyond these few "exceptions" listed above, you'll find us to be very accommodating!!
Note--Please contact us for our shipping address PRIOR to sending any returns. Any returns must also be sent to
us insured for their full retail value, postage prepaid by returning sender, and must be received in the same condition as sent.
All returns must be approved in advance by contacting Ukiyoe Gallery.
Your Satisfaction and Confidence
When you buy a print from Ukiyoe Gallery, you can therefore do so with complete confidence based on our many
years of personal collecting experience and knowledgeable sales expertise. Again: We want you to be completely
satisfied with your purchase.
